Activities

Swellendam is surrounded by the Langeberg Mountains, that’s why Swellendam is a great destination for people who love to hike.
  • Marloth Nature reserve – offers lots of day hikes and also multiple hikes.
  • Bontebok Nature reserve – is lovely for game drives where you can spot Bonteboks, you can fish in Breede river, and there are lovely walks there, too. Great for smaller children as the trails are mostly flat.
  • Mountain biking – Swellendam has recently built 4 different trails for mountain bikers. You can choose which one you like according to your level of fitness.
  • Porcini mushrooms picking – often we have guests coming here specifically to look and pick porcini mushrooms, Swellendam humid and warm weather is great environment for them, I can give tips on where to find them.
  • Fairy Sanctuary – one of its kind really this place is a treat for children and even for adults. Definitely a must to visit if you are staying here with your little ones.
  • Under the Oaks  market – I personally love this small market under the oak trees providing a great venue specially for summer days. Come and support local people offering their produce. You can find delicious food, crafts, beer or tap, entertainment for children and music. Market starts at 9am on Saturday and ends around 2pm.
Swellendam is well known for its great food and wine. Some of my favourite places are:
  • Woodpecker Pizza
  • La Belle Alliance
  • Barren & Blues
  • Koornlands restaurant
  • Tredici
If you feel like having a scenic drive out of Swellendam about 18kms away is Jan Harsmgat country house, a lovely restaurant amongst pecan trees. And less than 1km away is Greenlands Farm Table restaurant with artistic decor and stunning views of the mountains.
For the history and art lovers there is a Drostdy museum, Gallery Artery and Lifestyle and Art Gallery.
